Agriculture

The Mutt is a span of about 120 acres of dry land and 25 acres of wet land. Sri Swamiji grows Paddy, Millets (Ragi), Jawar, Gingelly, Groundnuts, Toor dal, Horse grams (Hurali) and Coconuts in this space.

As an example of sustainable livelihood and concern towards nutrition and hygiene, Sri Swamiji is an ideal agriculturalist producing his own yield. Every year the average produce approximately consists of 600 quintals paddy, 800 quintals Millet, 20 quintals dry chilies, 100 quintals horse gram, and 150 quintals groundnut. Other crops such as Caster seeds, Gingelly, and Toor dal are also grown moderately.

Residents of neighboring villages consult Swamiji for his expertise and advice in agricultural matter when faced with problems.

Vidya Peetha constantly consults the Agricultural Department to maintain best standards and practices in agricultural farming.
It has invested in contemporary equipment and technology to help ease labor with harvesting processes. It also rears farm animals such as buffaloes, bullocks, cows, and sheep. While bullocks are used in the farming processes such as tilling, cows and buffaloes are used to obtain dairy produce.
The dairy and agricultural produce such as grains, millet, milk, etc., are consumed to provide for the daily nourishment and meals of students, employees, devotees, and anyone in need at any time of the day. Even at times of famine (Baragaala), Swamiji caters to the regular nourishments of the less privileged students by collecting alms from neighboring villages. The basic philosophy of Veerashaiva faith is to provide basic Shelter and Food for the needful; and collecting alms for this purpose is considered a noble service in the Veerashaiva community. Swamiji adheres to this principal steadfast.

Cattle Rearing

Care and attention are rendered towards cattle rearing as the dairy produce from cattle farming is used for internal activities of the Mutt. ‘Hygiene’ is given utmost importance, as the dairy produce is used for pooja rituals and preparation of meals for students and devotees. For vigilance and protection of the animals, separate buildings – Goshalas are constructed and maintained on the premises of the Mutt. Health and hygiene of the animals is catered in accordance with scientific and modern technology with regards to fodder, fodder trays, and regular medical examinations by proficient veterinary doctors.

Afforestation

Swamiji harbors a deep fondness and affection towards nature and environment. He has initiated an Afforestation Program and has planted more than 3200 permanent trees of different species.

Many plants have been planted along roadsides, avenues, and moorland (uncultivated span of land). Some of the planted trees are Teak, Sol, Rose wood, Silver, Neem, Peepal (Arali), Banyan (Aala), Arjuna (Swara Matti), Baboolie (Gobbala Mara), Bage, Sarve, Tamarind (Hunase), Mango, Bilwa, Jack Fruit, and Coconut trees. Afforestation helps in regulating temperature during summer that in turn helps keep the surrounding area cool and green. This program sustains and brings a balance to the biodiversity of the area, with which natural biotic control ensues on the natural havocs that can befall on the crops, such as the destruction caused by the rats. It is in fact noticed that there has been a decrease in the attack on agricultural crops by some birds, pests and insects in the past decade.
