For roughly six centuries, Sri Kshetra Maralegavi Mutt has carried a living tradition of spiritual thought, learning and service in southern Karnataka.

01 · THE ORIGIN

Six centuries.
One continuing purpose.

Sri Kshetra Maralegavi Mutt is described by the institution as one of the ancient Veerashaiva Mutts of southern Karnataka, with a history of around six hundred years. Its origins are associated with the revered Sri Thontada Siddalingeshwara Swamiji.

02 · THE FOUNDING STORY

A place of penance.
A tradition begins.

The Mutt's published history records that Sri Thontada Siddalingeshwara Swamiji undertook a deep penance at this sacred place for 48 days and experienced what the tradition describes as a divine glimpse of Lord Shiva. Following this experience, he began his mission of preaching the practices of Veerashaiva Dharma.

The institution's origin is rooted in the life and spiritual mission of Sri Thontada Siddalingeshwara Swamiji.

The Mutt's history places the early teaching tradition amid the forests and hills around the Arkavathi, connecting spiritual life with place.

The name

The institutional account associates the name Marale Gavi Mutt with the tradition of Sri Siddalingeshwara Swamiji meditating with 600 disciples in a cave.

The Ashram

At the request of local inhabitants, Sri Siddalingeshwara Swamiji established an Ashram under the management of his disciple Sri Shivayogi Munishwara Swamiji.

The Mutt's published history records sixteen Parampara Swamijis contributing to the institution after its establishment, with Dr. Sri Mummadi Shivarudra Swamiji identified as the 17th Guru in succession and the present Matadhipathi.
